At 12 years old, Lester Selby was walking to the kitchen in his home in Georgetown, Guyana, in search of a late-night glass of water, when he stumbled upon his older cousin holding a wad of cash. “I was like, ‘Wow, how come you have so much money,’ ” Selby recalled. His cousin said he earned it from his job as an accountant. In that moment, Selby set his sights on becoming just that. About three years later, in 1997, Selby along with his family moved to the U.S., where he eventually fulfilled his goal of becoming an accountant. He’s also been active in helping the Charlotte immigrant community, and was recognized this year by Mayor Vi Lyles’ office for that work.

Every year, billions of dollars in Research & Development (R&D) tax credits go unclaimed—not because businesses don’t qualify, but because they don’t realize they do. Many small and mid-sized business owners assume R&D credits are reserved for Silicon Valley tech giants, pharmaceutical firms, or companies with formal research labs. In reality, the R&D Tax Credit is one of the most accessible, powerful, and underutilized tools in the U.S. tax code—and it’s available to businesses in manufacturing, software development, architecture, food science, engineering, construction, and more. If your company builds, improves, tests, or designs any product, process, or software—whether on-site or remotely—you may already qualify. And the savings can be substantial: $10,000 to over $250,000 per year, depending on wages, materials, and innovation costs. As of 2025, even pre-revenue startups can claim the credit against payroll taxes—giving early-stage businesses a valuable source of non-dilutive cash flow when they need it most. In this blog, we’ll unpack exactly what the R&D Tax Credit is, what counts as qualified research, how much you can save, and how ATG Advisors helps companies of all sizes take advantage of this strategic opportunity

In an era where talent retention , budget efficiency , and regulatory compliance are top priorities, nonprofits are under more pressure than ever to do more with less. Whether you're managing a healthcare nonprofit, religious organization, foundation, or educational institution, finding creative ways to stretch limited dollars without compromising employee benefits is critical. One of the most overlooked strategies nonprofits can leverage is the Section 125 Cafeteria Plan . These pre-tax benefit programs allow employees to cover eligible health and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars , while also reducing the employer’s share of payroll taxes. For nonprofits—who often compete with for-profit entities on talent but can’t match them on salary—this tool is a game-changer . In this blog, we’ll break down what a Section 125 Plan is, why it’s ideal for nonprofit organizations, and how to implement one for your team in 2025.
