When I applied for this internship, I was going through that typical “mid-senior year of college” panic attack that you get when you realize that you have no clue what you are doing after graduation. I worked on making my resume look more professional and then immediately applied here at ATG. While I was extremely excited for this opportunity, I was also a little scared when they hired me. This was my first internship and professional job which was pretty intimidating at first and it didn’t help that I knew absolutely nothing about accounting. Luckily as soon as I walked in, I was greeted by smiling faces and by the end of the first week I felt so welcomed like I was already apart of the ATG family.
ATG accountants and advisors is a full service accounting firm in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a communications major helping ATG build their marketing and social media presence. We are trying to get our name out there to help grow the business even further and to stay connected to our clients for faster, more efficient customer service. As a part of my internship, I connected with professionals on social media, created blogs to inform clients of who we are and what we do, and reached out to our clients through posts on social media. I also did your stereotypical intern tasks like walking the company puppy, Oswald, getting coffee for the boss, and making phone calls to clients. If anything though, that was one of my favorite aspects of the intership experience because it was exactly what I always pictured an internship would be like. However there were other parts of this experience that I wasn’t quite prepared for.
One of the biggest challenges I faced while interning here at ATG was that it’s an accounting firm and I’ve never taken an accounting class in my life. I figured I wouldn’t really have to know anything about it if I was just doing marketing, but boy was I wrong. I basically had to do a crash course in accounting in order to create and publish multiple blogs over the course of my time here. It was definitely a curve ball I wasn’t expecting but overall I’m glad I had that challenge. I eventually got the hang of it and it really helped me learn more about what I’m doing for a career than just coffee runs and filing papers.
Overall my experience was a very positive one. I got a taste of a potential career path, I met some incredible people, and I learned a lot while I was here. Not just about accounting or marketing, but how to interact in the real world and it helped me grow as a person. There were also the perks of getting to work with the cutest pit puppy, Oswald the ATG dog! I am so thankful to all of the amazing people here at ATG for this opportunity.
